This month, let us celebrate the courage, brilliance, and unbreakable spirit of Black women throughout time—warriors like Queen Amanirenas, who fearlessly defended her people against the Roman Empire in ancient Sudan, to trailblazers like Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. And let us not forget the countless other phenomenal Black women whose strength, wisdom, and vision have forged new paths across generations.

Black history is not just a story of struggle, but also one of brilliance, perseverance, and transformation- Without it, where would we be?

Black History—May it never be erased, always remembered, uplifted, and celebrated!

The Sister Circle Mentoring Program

January marked National Mentoring Month, and here at Girl Power Rocks, we celebrated with gratitude and appreciation for the incredible mentors who dedicate their time and love to our at-promise girls. During the Sister Circle Mentoring Recognition Ceremony, we highlighted the impactful work of these mentors and the difference they make in the lives of the young women they support.

One of the highlights from last month was a special self-care day planned by a few of our mentors for their mentees. The event was centered around holistic well-being, with activities such as learning about skin and nail care, practicing yoga, engaging in sound healing, journaling, having girl talk, and exploring healthy eating. This self-care day was a powerful reminder of the importance of nurturing both mind and body, a value we instill in our girls through the Sister Circle Mentorship Program.

The impact of mentorship goes far beyond just providing guidance; it truly changes lives. Research shows that youth with mentors are significantly more likely to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Mentored youth are:

  • 52% less likely to skip school days

  • 37% less likely to skip classes

  • 55% more likely to attend college, especially when facing opportunity gaps

  • 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities

Additionally, many mentored youth report positive improvements in their mental health and school performance, further reinforcing the power of strong, supportive mentorship relationships.

We thank our dedicated mentors for being guiding lights in the lives of our girls. Your efforts not only help them succeed today but also lay the foundation for their bright futures. Here's to continued growth, empowerment, and the incredible impact of mentorship!

Girl Power Rocks Advocates for
“At-Promise” Girls in Tallahassee

January 15, the Girl Power Rocks team traveled to Tallahassee to meet with state lawmakers, continuing their mission to advocate for “at-promise” girls across Florida. During a whirlwind six hours at the state capitol, the team successfully held 12 meetings with senators and representatives to discuss the critical challenges faced by girls in underserved communities and to garner support for three key appropriation requests.

Among the lawmakers the team met with Illiana Garcia’s staff and Representative Ashley Gantt, both of whom expressed enthusiasm for Girl Power Rocks' initiatives and reiterated their commitment to supporting the needs of girls in their constituencies and across the state. These meetings highlighted the importance of funding programs like Mama Hattie’s House, The Florida Girls Initiative, and Girls Intervention Program PLUS (GIPP), which aim to provide safe spaces, resources, and opportunities for young women to thrive.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to meet with leaders who share our commitment to empowering girls”, said Girl Power Rocks founder & CEO Thema Campbell. “Their feedback and encouragement were invaluable, and we’re thrilled to have secured commitments of support from several lawmakers.”

With their next trip to the state capitol already in the planning stages, the Girl Power Rocks team remains steadfast in their mission to ensure that all girls in Miami and throughout Florida have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the next visit to Tallahassee and further updates on the progress of these vital programs. For more information about Girl Power Rocks and their initiatives, visit girlpowerrocks.org

On February 11th, we celebrated International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Our STEAM Program continues to inspire and educate young girls in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Research shows that girls with access to STEAM education are more likely to pursue careers in these fields and break down the barriers traditionally held in male-dominated industries. Did you know? Girls in STEAM programs are 55% more likely to attend college, and they develop essential leadership skills that can shape their futures.

We’re inspired by trailblazers like Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. These women exemplify the endless possibilities for our girls when given the tools, support, and education they need to succeed.

From March 23-26, 2025, they will visit:

  • Georgia State University

  • Georgia Institute of Technology

  • Spelman College

  • Clark Atlanta University

Power Source - Elements-13 copy.png

This March, our Girl Power Rocks participants are embarking on an unforgettable journey to explore some of the nation’s top colleges and historic cultural sites.

The Georgia College and Heritage Tour (CHT) is a transformative opportunity for at-promise girls to step outside of the classroom and experience college life and history first-hand. These field trips help the girls develop a greater appreciation for learning, improve their observational insights, and gain hands-on experience that inspires their futures.

Why Support the College & Heritage Tour?
The CHT allows at-promise girls to visit diverse colleges, including campus tours, understanding admissions requirements, the financial aid process, and exploring extracurricular activities, sororities, and more. These young women will also interact with current students and staff, explore dorms, and get a true sense of what it’s like to live and study on campus.

Power Source - Elements-13.png

Studies show that students exposed to art, culture, and real-world learning experiences improve their critical thinking and academic performance. For many of our girls, the CHT is a life-changing opportunity—helping them aspire to be first-generation college students and future leaders in their communities.

Help Make This Experience Possible!
This program is an extension of the Girl Power Rocks mission to empower and inspire young girls by providing them with opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have access to. But we need your support to make this trip a reality!

👉 Donate today to help fund the 2025 College & Heritage Tour and give our girls the chance to explore their futures.

Your support makes a lasting impact—help us provide these life-changing experiences to our girls and get one step closer to breaking barriers in education, culture, and beyond!

In a remarkable show of commitment to empowering young girls, Publix Charities has generously donated $60,000 to Girl Power Rocks, to purchase a much-needed new van. This donation will significantly enhance the organization’s ability to provide transportation to the girls it serves throughout Miami-Dade County to its various programs.

For the past few years, Publix has been a steadfast supporter of Girl Power Rocks, contributing to its mission through financial assistance and community engagement. The new van will allow the organization to expand its reach, ensuring that more girls have access to safe, reliable transportation for after-school programs, leadership training, and enrichment activities.

The donation was made possible through the dedication and advocacy of Publix Community Relations Manager Robyn Hankerson Printemps, who played an instrumental role in securing the funding. Her commitment to Girl Power Rocks and belief in its mission have been pivotal in strengthening the ongoing partnership between Publix, Publix Charities, and the organization.

This donation is just one of the many ways Publix and Publix Charities have supported Girl Power Rocks over the years. Their continued investment in the organization has helped fund educational workshops, leadership initiatives, and community engagement efforts aimed at empowering young girls to achieve their full potential.

This partnership exemplifies the power of corporate philanthropy in transforming lives and strengthening communities.

Publix and Publix Charities, you rock!
